Living with a range of disabilities, a group of young people get the chance to go surfing in Devon, most of them for the first time. Hosted every summer by a dedicated group of volunteers, Breaking the Barrier gives young people a chance to don a wetsuit, ride a wave, and experience the amazing feeling of succeeding at surfing, just like anybody else.
So far, the surf instructors haven’t failed: they have the patience and skill to take children surfing with Down’s Syndrome, Autism, and even Cerebral Palsy. The excitement and sense of achievement for the children is evident on their faces.
The effect on the whole family is significant, too. Taking part in a sport, experiencing nature, spending a typical day on the beach: these are the childhood memories most of us take for granted, and the things that often prove difficult for families living with disabilities to experience.
Produced by Fairground Films – we got to do the on board filming!
